Recent progress in communication technologies leads to new networks architectures and new developments of distributed multimedia applications. Multimedia data are characterised by high throughputs, continuous flows with temporal constraints and synchronisation requirements to ensure their presentation coherence. Actual communication networks can not provide all of these services together (high throughputs, quality and temporal constraints respect). But communication supports and services multiplicity open a new way of thinking : the choice of a communication support depending on the application constraints. If this multiplicity provides some positive aspects, several difficulties have to be coped, as end-to-end services heterogeneity. This leads us to conceive and realise a new multi-network communication architecture which takes into account the specific needs of multimedia applications. On one hand, when several networks interfaces are available, a protocol allowing to select the best communication interface for a multimedia flow is defined. To preserve multimedia synchronisation, partial order mechanisms are integrated to the protocol. On the other hand, when a data flow have to cross heterogeneous network domains, a solution preserving the quality of service provided by transport protocols is proposed. This middleware solution is based on the interruption of transport level connections by proxies located on network domain borders. A flow model linking a language dedicated to multimedia flows specification with protocol mechanisms for flows recognition is proposed to formalise the quality of service. Finally, this thesis contributes to develop mechanisms for dynamic transport protocol deployment.
